San Francisco Story Fest 2025

San Francisco Story Fest 2025 explored the emotional, cultural, and instinctual forces of migration through personal stories that echoed the movement of wind across borders.

The theme for the inaugural SF Story Fest was “No Small Wind is Blowing.” The show was a homecoming for Back Pocket, with a focus on migration in all its forms: people, ideas, culture, and identity. Against the backdrop of an ongoing political unrest, the event brought together journalists, artists, and community voices to explore the emotional and complex realities of crossing boundaries, both tangible and invisible.

“I left feeling happy, exhilarated even, that there were so many smart, creative people in SF’s journalist community.”

Challenges

  1. Living up to the reputation: With the success of previous Story Fests in Detroit and Philly, the team faced high audience expectations and the challenge of offering something new while retaining the essence of what SF fans expect from a Back Pocket show.
  2. Exploration of unexpected migration stories: create a show that touches multiple tones and emotional tenors. Explore immigration/emigration as well as cultural migration and the migrating of ideas.
  3. Design for Movement: The theme of migration demanded both new design elements and stage design that evoked transition and transformation.

Solutions

  1. Theme-Driven Curation: Stories were chosen to reflect both personal and political aspects of migration—some touching, some humorous—all grounded in people’s lived experiences.
  2. Staging the Metaphor: The team crafted a visual setup using wrapped boxes and luggage, evoking movement, baggage, and the tension between leaving one home and finding a new one.
  3. Sensory Experience: The show incorporated innovative multimedia experiments, such as scratch-and-sniff stickers using an ancestral Sudanese perfume, to make these stories of migration more visceral.

Results

  • The event completely sold out, with audience surveys reflecting emotional impact and a strong sense of community resonance.
  • It pushed the boundaries of the typical storytelling format, introducing multiple languages, interactive elements, and deep emotional storytelling.
  • The show expanded Back Pocket Media’s presence in San Francisco, while maintaining a connection to national themes relevant in Detroit, Philly, and beyond.

Reflection

San Francisco Story Fest 2025 proved that storytelling is more than just words—it carries movement, memory, scent, soul. The performances reflected both what migration is and what it could be. They show us the motivations of movement — the will and chance, the hope and fear — an instinct for change that is louder than reason.
